Introducing my latest passion project: fleurfetti — sprinkles blended with edible flower petals for use on cakes, cupcakes, cookies… From the garden and kitchen of FactoryGirl.
At Factory Girl, we’re a little obsessed with flowers — it’s become a thing we’re known for. We’ve been doing the fresh-flower-topped cake thing since long before it was the big trend that it is now, and we love working with floral-inspired flavors. Fresh flowers became such a big part of what we do with decoration of our baked goods and our shop, that a few years ago, we expanded our on-site garden and can now say that we grow at least 50% of the flowers that we use during the spring/summer/autumn months. We use fresh flowers on cakes and cupcakes and as garnishes on our tarts and bundts and just about anything else we can pop them on that makes sense. We also press a whole lot of home-grown and foraged flowers and we use these on our pressed-flower cakes and cookies.
Last year, we started dehydrating our home-grown rose and peony petals and we were using them as garnish on some of our baked goods but, you know what? They don’t really feel that great to chew up with the baked good, and the flavor doesn’t really add anything to the experience, so mostly, they end up getting taken off the baked good before eating and that left me thinking — is there a better way to use these petals that we’ve so painstakingly grown, collected, dehyrated, and stored?
Fast-forward to January of this year, when, on a cleaning and organizing spree after closing up shop on a Sunday afternoon, I got the notion to buzz up all of these jars of organically-grown petals in the food-processor. And they were so pretty!!
That week, I sprinkled them on a batch of pressed flower cookies along with some other small nonpareils. And that was where the notion for fleurfetti was born! It took us a couple of weeks to land on a name (and to register it, and to get the .com, and the Instagram…), and to get in some packaging supplies, but we were smitten, and excited to bring these mixes to you for use on your own pretty baked goods. Stay tuned as we go through the seasons this year - we’ll be using Fleurfetti on our baked goods and we’ll be bottling small amounts of each blend to sell in our shop.
